To resort to the mediation of the Druids was simply necessary, because the Celts believed that they knew the temper of the gods and knew how to speak their language. The presence of the druid made it possible to hope that the grateful sacrifices will be accepted favorably and will allow to achieve the highest mercy. Before the Celtic peoples were Christianized, their traditional royal sacrifice consisted of the ritual “mating” of a druid with a horse, after which the animal was sacrificed.
Frequent were human sacrifices. Usually, criminals and prisoners of war were sacrificed, but when there were none, they were killed by their fellow tribesmen. The unfortunate were burned, killed by arrows or stabbed with a sword. This left an indelible impression, forced to completely obey the will of the priests.
